Dos and Don’ts of Good Dental Hygiene

Dental hygiene is necessary for your overall health. Patients who practice good oral habits will get to enjoy its benefits. If you do not take good care of your teeth, then you will have to deal with its consequences as you get older. You will have to face tooth loss and might require tooth replacement like dentures, dental implants, etc. In order to achieve a good level of oral hygiene, follow the dos and don'ts mentioned below!

Dos

  • Practice brushing your teeth twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Brush with a soft-bristled brush and make sure to brush all the teeth surfaces, even the places that are hard to reach.
  • Make it a point to floss your teeth every day. By flossing, you can remove any food that is stuck between your teeth and the bacterial film that forms plaque.
  • Regularize dental visits every six months. With regular visits, the dentist can detect early signs of cavities and gum disease, and also prevent them from progressing.
  • Eat food that is healthy for your mouth. Indulge foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats in your diet.
  • Drink plenty of water for the production of saliva.

Don'ts

  • Do not forget to replace your toothbrush. You need to replace your toothbrushes every three months or after getting recovered from being sick. If you use an electric toothbrush, replace the head instead of buying a whole new one.
  • Do not brush too soon after having a meal. If you brush just after eating acidic food, it may lead to enamel erosion. You should at least wait an hour.
  • Do not over-bleach your teeth. This can lead to teeth sensitivity towards hot and cold foods, creating numerous other problems.
  • Do not ignore pain or abnormalities that you face within the oral cavity. Toothaches could be a sign of a severe dental problem. Seek your dentist when you find any changes in your dental health.
  • Do not consume lots of soft drinks and sugary foods. These foods can prove to be highly acidic over time, affecting your enamel by wearing them down. If you consume sugary substances frequently, then it will make plaque grow faster in the enamel, which increases the formation of cavities.
